10 great shows from 2023 to watch on Hulu

Hulu got a big price hike this year, but it’s getting increasingly harder to cancel (at least for me) thanks to the overwhelming number of shows and movies to watch on the Disney-owned service. While those of us in the US can currently access Hulu separately from Disney Plus, things are about to change very soon.

Disney is planning to launch a combined Hulu and Disney Plus app for users who subscribe to both services, and it’s set to come out next year after some initial testing. Keep in mind that this won’t change the content available on either service, just how you access it. For now, though, here are some of the best shows released on Hulu this year.

Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short are back for season 3 of Only Murders in the Building. This comedy follows Mabel (Gomez), Charles (Martin), and Oliver (Short) as three neighbors in an Upper West Side apartment building brought together by their love of true crime. The show’s third season has the trio wrapped up in yet another mystery, and this time, they must get to the bottom of the suspicious death that occurred during a Broadway performance.

The Bear is one of the best original series that Hulu has. It centers around Jeremy Allen White as Carmy Berzatto, an award-winning chef who’s forced to return to his hometown and take over his family’s local sandwich shop after the death of his brother. The show’s second season has Carmy’s kitchen staff taking on yet another challenge: opening up a new restaurant.

If you’re a Futurama fan, you’ll want to check out the reboot on Hulu. The 11th installment marks Futurama’s first new season in a decade, which brings back the Planet Express crew, including Fry (Billy West), Blender (John DiMaggio), and Leela (Katey Sagal) for even more wacky adventures that stay true to the animated series’s style. This isn’t just a one-off season, either. Hulu has ordered three additional seasons, with the next one debuting in 2024.

Speaking of reboots, Hulu and Disney Plus have created their own modern take on the ‘90s-era Goosebumps series that might’ve freaked you out as a kid. The revamped show follows a group of high schoolers who find themselves encountering supernatural happenings linked to the death of a student from their parents’ past. Unlike the older show, which has a self-contained story in each episode, Hulu’s adaptation consists of separate episodes tied to a single storyline with recognizable elements of Goosebumps lore sprinkled throughout.

A Murder at the End of the World puts true crime author and amateur detective Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) at the center of a gripping mystery that unfolds when she’s invited to a billionaire’s remote retreat in Iceland. During the gathering, one of the guests winds up dead, and it’s up to Darby to figure out what happened before the suspected killer goes after another victim. The Knives Out-style story moves a bit slow at times, but there’s still enough intrigue to hold your attention.

Moving is a thrilling Korean series that offers a refreshing take on the superhero genre. It follows three high school students with superhuman abilities as they attempt to evade the government agency that’s looking for them with the help of their ex-spy parents. Moving is based on a webtoon of the same name and managed to become one of the most-streamed Korean originals on Hulu and Disney Plus in the US just a week after its release.

The Other Black Girl tells the story of Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel), an editorial assistant at a publishing company called Wagner Books. Nella is the only Black woman who works there until the company hires Hazel-May McCall. While the two quickly become friends, things start to unravel when Nella suspects Hazel might be trying to hurt her career, and she discovers some unsettling secrets about Wagner Books.

Tiny Beautiful Things stars Kathryn Hahn as Clare, a 49-year-old woman whose life just isn’t going as planned: her marriage is falling apart, her relationship with her daughter is strained, and her career as a writer isn’t going anywhere. Despite all the chaos going on in her daily life, she ends up taking on the role of an advice columnist named Sugar, allowing her to process some of her memories that take the form of flashbacks.

FX’s What We Do in the Shadows has also returned to Hulu for a fifth season, which features even more goofy antics from the eclectic group of vampires. If you’re not familiar with the mockumentary-style show, it follows four vampire housemates: Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) as they go about their daily lives among humans in Staten Island, New York.

A Small Light tells the true story of Miep Gies, the woman who helped Jewish families, including Anne Frank’s, during the Holocaust. The story begins in Amsterdam, where Anne Frank’s father, Otto, moved to escape Nazi Germany in 1933. There, Otto hires Miep as the secretary of the spice company he works for. However, the Nazis end up invading the Netherlands in 1942, leading Miep to hide the Frank family and others in the apartment above the company office.
