More current and former smokers should begin receiving annual lung cancer screenings under new guidelines from the American Cancer Society.

People 50 to 80 years old who smoked the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes a day for at least two decades should get annual screenings with a type of X-ray known as a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan, whether they’re current or former smokers, according to new guidelines published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
