Banned from Facebook to Taliban: Support Accounts on Instagram and WhatsApp will be Closed!
Speaking to the BBC, a Facebook spokesperson announced that all posts praising or related to the Taliban are banned, and accounts that share posts will be banned. The decision is also valid on Facebook-owned platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp.
Facebook has announced that it has taken a decision regarding Afghanistan, where the eyes of the world are on. Explaining that this decision covers all social networks belonging to Facebook as well as Facebook, the officials said that even one of the accounts that praise the Taliban or share a message of support to the Taliban on their platforms will not be considered. Facebook will directly ban the accounts of pages, groups or users that support the Taliban.
In the statements made by a Facebook spokesperson speaking to the BBC, it was stated that it has a special team consisting of people who know the languages spoken in Afghanistan and know the region for the implementation of the said decision. According to the spokesperson, this team will closely mark people and institutions that feel close to the Taliban, with languages commonly used in Afghanistan. The slightest sharing to be made in this process will lead to the closure of the account.
“The attitude of governments is none of our business. The Taliban is a terrorist organization.
In the statements made by the spokesperson of Facebook, it was stated that the US government considers the Taliban a terrorist organization and Facebook’s view is in this direction. Noting that governments in various countries are aware that they are close to recognizing the Taliban, the spokesperson said that this approach does not bind them.
The Taliban is one of the organizations that actively use the internet world. In this context, especially WhatsApp is one of the communication tools actively used by the Taliban. The Facebook spokesperson, who opened a separate parenthesis about the world’s most used instant messaging application, said that there are WhatsApp groups that were allegedly established directly by Taliban members, and that work on them is ongoing. If the groups in question are found to belong to the Taliban, or if new groups are opened in the process, these groups will also be blocked from WhatsApp.
