Flooding of Piʻilani Hwy. in Kaupō; downed power lines on Makawao Ave.; flooding on S. Kihei Road at Ohukai; Landslide at Honokōhau : Maui Now

Flooding in South Maui. (1.16.24) PC: County of Maui.

Some parks, portions of roadways remain closed (Update: 11:07 a.m., Jan. 17, 2024): Some County of Maui parks and portions of roadways remain closed today due to standing water following flooding that occurred afterheavy rainfall Tuesday.

  • This morning, portions of South Kīhei Road were closed due to standing water. Overflow from the storm undermined a portion of South Kīhei Road and washed out the waterline near Isana restaurant in the 500 block of South Kīhei Road. County Department of Water Supply is making emergency repairs that are expected to take two to three days. The area is open to one lane of traffic only. Motorists should expect delays.
  • Piʻilani Highway from Mile Marker 19 to 21 in Kaupō remains closed today.
  • Kenolio Dog Park in Kīhei and Kanahā at Kaʻa Point remains closed. (Hāna Ball Park and Kalepolepo Beach Park reopened after being closed by flooding Tuesday).

Piʻilani Hwy. closed in Kaupō due to flooding: (Update: 9:15 a.m., Jan. 17, 2024): Piʻilani Highway is closed between Mile 29 and 31 in Kaupō due to flooding.

Honoapiʻilani landslide Mile 36 (Honokōhau): (Update: 5:20 a.m., Jan. 17, 2024): Crews are working to remove a landslide blocking the northbound lane of the Honoapiʻilani Highway at Mile 35.5 and 36 in Honokōhau, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Makawao Ave. fallen trees, downed power lines: (Update: 4:57 a.m., Jan. 17, 2024): Traffic on Makawao Ave. is now being detoured onto Lāʻie Dr. (3:19 a.m., Jan. 17, 2024): A portion of Makawao Ave. is closed due to two large trees that have fallen and downed power lines block both lanes. The closure is at 431 Makawao Avenue. 

S. Kīhei Road flooding: (3:17 a.m., Jan. 17, 2024): Maui police have closed South Kīhei Road from Ohukai to Kīhei Bay Vista at 715 South Kīhei Road, due to heavy flooding. Crews with the County of Maui Public Works Department were notified.
