Why You May Have Insomnia Right Before Your Period

Feel miserable and exhausted for days before your period starts each month? A new study suggests that fluctuations in sleep and mood may be connected to menstrual cycles.

For the study, scientists asked 51 healthy women ranging in age from 18 to 35 to wear sleep trackers and complete daily diaries logging their sleep and emotions over the course of two menstrual cycles.

In the days before their periods started — a time known as the perimenstrual phase in monthly cycles — participants experienced significantly more nighttime awakenings and spent less time in bed. They also reported heightened feelings of anger and fewer positive emotions like happiness, calmness, and enthusiasm, according to study results published in the Journal of Sleep Research.

“I think that many women will say that the mood and sleep-related findings are not surprising at all. Some may even feel validated that their experiences have been documented scientifically,” says lead study author Jessica Meers, PhD, a clinical psychologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who is board-certified in sleep medicine.
